Gloria Allred demands answers on behalf of Jeffrey Epstein's victims from the Department of Justice (DOJ) surrounding his death
Gloria Allred, who represents 20 Jeffrey Epstein victims, wrote to the Department of Justice (DOJ) claiming his victims have a right to know the truth about the circumstances surrounding his death
In a letter dated March 2, 2023 Gloria Allred sent to Michael Horowitz, the Inspector General of the United States Department of Justice, she is demanding answers on behalf of the 20 victims she represents.
Jeffrey Epstein died on August 20, 2019 and to date no answers have been forthcoming about the inquiry into his death.
The letter Allred sent reads as follows:
Dear Inspector General Horowitz:
I represent 20 victims of Jeffrey Epstein, many of whom spoke to law enforcement prior to Mr. Epstein’s death while he was in federal custody. A number of my clients were hoping to be able to testify and confront Mr. Epstein in a court of law while he was being prosecuted in the Southern District of New York for sex trafficking them when they were underage girls. Their goal was to learn the whole truth about his sex trafficking scheme, and to finally achieve a measure of justice, because justice had long been eluding them.
Once again, however, Jeffrey Epstein escaped justice in a criminal court because his life was cut short while he was in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) where he was found deceased in his cell on August 10, 2019. Many of Mr. Epstein’s victims question how and why the system failed to prevent the death of Jeffrey Epstein. Victims have been promised answers but after years of waiting for those answers, they have yet to receive them.
For example, on August 10, 2019, United States Attorney General William Barr announced an investigation, saying “I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody. Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered. In addition to the FBI’s investigation, I have consulted with the Inspector General who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epstein’s death."
In addition, two days later, Attorney General Barr said in a speech, "I was appalled – indeed, the whole Department was – and frankly angry, to learn of the MCC’s failure to adequately secure this prisoner. We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation. The FBI and the Office of Inspector General are already doing just that. We will get to the bottom of what happened and there will be accountability."
My understanding is that subsequently when there have been inquiries seeking updates concerning this investigation, the DOJ has commented that “the investigation is ongoing.” However, if the DOJ OIG’s office was waiting for the outcome of the prosecution of the guards at MCC who were on duty when Jeffrey Epstein either committed suicide or was the victim of homicide, that criminal case involving the guards has been resolved with a deferred prosecution agreement, and ultimately a nolle prosequi in December 2021 dismissing the charges.
It has been 3 ½ years since former Attorney General Barr announced the investigation. On behalf of many victims of Jeffrey Epstein whom I represent, I respectfully request information on when this investigation announced by Mr. Barr will conclude. It is unfair that the victims of Jeffrey Epstein continue to be denied the knowledge of the conditions which existed at MCC that led to Mr. Epstein’s death. The victims of Mr. Epstein deserve to be told the truth about how and why the justice system failed them again.
“Justice delayed is justice denied.” We look forward to your response.
Very truly yours,
ALLRED, MAROKO & GOLDBERG
